Our skin naturally sheds dead skin cells over time and every 28-40 days a new skin cell is born (cell turn-over). However, if you think about it, waiting for a month to have new skin cells is gruesome and in that span of time, your skin may appear lifeless and dull.
For the past months, the problems I’ve had with my skin included having breakouts, tired appearance, and having that haggard look in the morning. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had numerous products in my arsenal to combat it but despite the numerous layers of products that I apply to my face, that ‘glass skin’ goal just went farther away from me to the point that I think that the products I use are not good enough.
I discovered the amazing benefits of exfoliation when I decided to give St. Ives Apricot Scrub (physical exfoliator) a second try and then suddenly my skin looked immediately brighter, clearer, and lively.
With my readings, I learned that exfoliation is actually good for your skin as it can increase the skin’s radiance and clarity as it increases the turn-over of new and healthier cells. You can use mild acids such as this COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid which has willow bark water, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid used to remove blackheads, brighten, and moisturize skin.
The other benefits of exfoliating includes unclogging your pores. This is important because when your sebaceous or oil glands produce oil, it should go out of your pores. When dead skin cells are blocking the way, the oil gets trapped underneath the skin, causing breakouts because the oil has nowhere else to go. This is why exfoliating your face helps to prevent acne as well.
What happens if you don’t exfoliate?
When you skip the process of exfoliation, your dead skin cells just pile up after another to the point that it can block your skin from absorbing the products. So that expensive serum that you are using? It kind of just sits on top of your skin instead of it going ‘in’ to the deeper layers of your skin. This is what I experienced, the products and the dead cells piling up just on the surface, to the point that my skin is suffocated and is unreachable from the effects of the skin products I use.
Product I am using…
Currently, I am using COSRX AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner in order to gently exfoliate my skin. It is an effective toner for removing dead flaky skin caused by lack of moisture and occurring dead skin cell, which will help with the early prevention of whiteheads and blackheads.
Should I exfoliate every day?
Exfoliating ensures that your skin gets to absorb the products you are using. Just like any good thing, exfoliating is a two-sided sword that when overdone causes more damage than harm. Dermatologists suggest exfoliating twice a week preferably using chemical exfoliators (gentle acids) as compared to physical exfoliators (with physical granules).
Until you read from me again.
